Alton, Vir. (July 23, 2010) - When Grassroots Motorsports Magazine put out the call for hardcore road race cars to compete in its 2010 Ultimate Track Car Challenge, a variety of drivers stepped up. Since Red Line has a long-time relationship with the magazine, they asked us to be the official oil of the event, which took place at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) on Friday, July 23rd. The event brought together some of the fastest cars in the country to compete on the 3.27 mile road course in a time trial format.
Many in the field of nearly 70 teams came for the bragging rights, others for the experience of competing against the best of the best. The field was diverse, including Mark Stielow's latest stunner - an LS9 powered '69 Camaro, an original Lola T70, Porsche 911 Turbo and GT3 Cup cars, a Dodge Viper ACR-X, BMW M3, Noble M400, Ferrari 360 and 430, Corvette Z06, Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru WRX and more.
Mark Stielow - a long time Red Line customer and friend - used the UTCC to debut "Red Devil", his latest pro-touring Camaro that features a modified LS9 producing well in excess of 800 horsepower and sophisticated four-link rear suspension. Since this was the car's first time on a track it had a few teething problems, but still made a good showing.
BimmerWorld owner/driver James Clay signed up in a lightly modified E46 M3, which held its own against a field of racecars. James spent much of his day helping fellow racers learn the track and tune their cars. Other notables include Kune Wittmer in a Dodge Viper ACR-X and Michael Levitas / TPC Racing who brought out a stunning Porsche GT1R and a GT2.
Phil Currin ended winning the event in his highly modified Mopar, and the time spread between the top three finishers was less than one second. More details will be available soon in Grassroots Motorsports Magazine. Overall it was a fantastic event and we were thrilled to be a part of it.
