The No. 99 Oreca “Red Dragon” of GAINSCO Racing beat the heat and the competition at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen in New York on Sunday, July 1st. Stephen Simpson had a phenomenal restart from third place to overtake Jordan Taylor and Juan Pablo Montoya down the inside of the “Inner Loop” chicane. The top three cars were less than two seconds apart as Simpson started the final lap, however he was able to keep both cars behind him to score victory for himself and co-drivers Misha Goikhberg and Chris Miller.
“I don’t really know what to say,” said Simpson. “Setting me up for that restart was the guys in the pits. I mean, we jumped a bunch of cars. I wasn’t sure if we could get there on fuel, but the guys weren’t saying anything to save extra fuel in my car, so I thought, ‘I’m going to go for it.”
Simpson and his team won the race by 1.954 seconds over Romain Dumas, who passed Montoya in the final turn to secure a second-place result. This win marks the first overall and Prototype class victory for all three drivers. At last year’s race, the trio finished in second place. This race also marks the first win for GAINSCO since a GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race at Circuit of The Americas in 2013.
The next race in the WeatherTech Championship will be held at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix on Sunday, July 8th.
