HOUSTON, Texas — Doug Kalitta, driver of the Red Line-equipped Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, won his second consecutive Houston NHRA SpringNationals this past weekend. Kalitta powered to his first victory of 2016 and third at the NHRA SpringNationals with a final-round pass of 3.813 at 280.60 for a hole shot victory in his Mac Tools dragster over No. 1 qualifier Steve Torrence.
"I am really happy and any time you can get a win is huge. It was the first time that we were able to put a Team Kalitta Toyota dragster in the winner's circle, so that is huge as well," said Kalitta. Thank you to all of our partners, Mac Tools, Red Line Oil, SealMaster, Champion, we could not do it without you. It was a close race out there. I had struggled with the lights today and to deliver that in the final was huge."
Torrence, a Kilgore, Texas, native and driver of the Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster, raced to a 3.810 at 306.81, but his slower reaction time proved to be the difference.
"We didn't close the deal and that’s the bottom line," said six-time Top Fuel winner, Torrence. "That's a great team over there (Kalitta), but we've got a great team, too. The thing is, this isn't the last time we're going to see Antron or Doug in the other lane. It's a long season and we've put ourselves back in contention for that championship knowing that we've got a great car moving forward."
The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues May 13-15 at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta.
