LAS VEGAS, Nevada - For the first time in Kalitta Motorsports history, both Del Worsham and Alexis DeJoria faced off in the Funny Car final round. DeJoria defeated Worsham in a close 3.968 to a 3.988 contest.
DeJoria’s Red Line-equipped Patron Tequila Toyota Camry took the win, with both drivers setting nearly identical reaction times and ETs.
“This fourth trophy was definitely a difficult one,” said DeJoria, who had not won in the last 33 races. “It took a lot of risks to get here.We made consistent passes down the racetrack all four runs in qualifying and on race day as well. I don’t know when the last time was that we did that. It’s incredible to be a part of this.” DeJoria moved to eighth in the Funny Car points. DeJoria also outran 16-time world champion John Force in the semifinals.
“Great weekend for Team Kalitta, I am excited for Alexis,” said Worsham. “This is what we have been working for many seasons. I wanted to be the one with the Wally, but if I cannot win, I would want it to be her. Great, great day for Kalitta Motorsports.”
Through four events on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season, Team Kalitta owns one win, four final round appearances and one no.1 qualifier. NHRA has two weeks off and then they turn to one of the most interesting races on the NHRA circuit, the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.
